February 1921GEORGE MURPHY
George Murphy was born November 28, 1861, at Princeton, Bureau County, Illinois, and passed away at his home in Earlham, Iowa, February 9th, 1921, at the age of 59 years, 2 months and 12 days.
His parents were Hamlin and Diantha Meade Murphy, natives of Ohio. Soon after their marriage they moved to Illinois where all of the children were born. In the spring of 1871 the family moved to this state, purchasing a farm in Penn Township, 1-2 miles west of what is now Penn Center church. Here the children grew to maturity, the deceased uniting with the church in his early youth.
In 1886 he was united in marriage to Miss Lydia Morgan. To this union was born one child, a son, Roy Ivan, who has made his home with his parents almost continually ever since. After sixteen years of domestic life, death entered the home and claimed the wife and mother. On Thanksgiving Day, 1904, he was again united in marriage to Mrs. Lavina Stanley who still survives.
Mr. Murphy followed the vocation of farming until eleven years ago, when he moved to Earlham and entered the service of the United State in the capacity of rural mail carrier.
He leaves one brother, Robert L. of Stuart, a sister, Mrs. Rose M. Morgan of Menlo, a son Roy, a devoted wife, other relatives, and a host of loving friends who will miss his glad hand and kindly smile.

The funeral of George Murphy, who died at his home in Earlham on Wednesday evening, after a few weeks’ illness, was held at the Methodist church Sunday afternoon. A large crowd of people were present at the service, which was conducted by his pastor, Rev. Piper, of the Methodist church. Mr. Murphy had been one of the rural mail carriers of Earlham for many years and had many friends both in town and on his route, who will miss his cheery smile. He was always kind and accommodating; willing to give his help at any time or in any way possible. His wife and son, Roy, have the sympathy of the community in their loss of husband and father.
