Wednesday, October 4, 1939Velma N. Hiatt, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Hiatt, was born near Peru, Iowa, Sept. 12, 1895, and spent the early part of her life in that vicinity. She graduated from the Peru high school and later attended the Palmer college at Albany, Mo., and Simpson college at Indianola, where she majored in music.
On Aug. 1, 1923, Miss Hiatt was united in marriage to Rev. Leland L. Spalding, pastor of Old South Christian church of Haverhill, Mass. To this union two daughters were born: Geraldine Mae and Marilyn who are left with their father to mourn the loss of their mother.
Mrs. Spalding took the part of a pastor's wife in a splendid way. Her trained soprano voice was always depended upon in the music of the church and community.
After a painfull illness which she endured with remarkable courage, Mrs. Spalding passed away in Des Moines, Sept. 24, at the age of 44 years and 12 days.
Besides her husband and two daughters, she leaves to mourn her early death her mother, Mrs.Rhoda Schoenenberger of Peru, two sisters, Mrs. Eulah Huff of Oakland, Ia., and Mrs. Merle Anderson of Indianola, Ia., and one brother, Frank Schoenenberger of Peru, Ia.
Last rites were held from the Stewart funeral home in Leon Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 26. Burial was made in the Leon cemetery.
