Jackson Township Farmer Loses Long Struggle Against Illness

John T. Williams, one of Madison county's most widely known farmers, died at the Winterset hospital Sunday after a long struggle for life against a fatal illness.

Mr. Williams was stricken with an infection last winter that spread into the blood stream. He was taken to the Winterset hospital where he waged a courageous battle against the disease for many months.

Mr. Williams was 61 years of age at the time of his death. He was born in Dallas county, near Dexter, on June 30, 1877, the son of James and Letitia Wallace Williams. For many years he had farmed in Jackson township, where he was widely and favorably known.

Nearest surviving relatives are his wife, the former Helen Hoeness, and two small children, a daughter and a son.

Funeral services were held in the Pitzer church Tuesday in charge of the pastor, the Rev. Peter Bock of Earlham. Burial was made in the Jackson township cemetery.

John Taylor Williams, son of James Taylor and Letitia Wallace Williams, was born June 30, 1877 near Dexter, Dallas county, Iowa, and passed away at the Winterset hospital, May 7, 1939 at the age of 61 years, 10 months, and 7 days.

When a child, he, with his parents moved near Stuart, later living around Menlo until he moved near Yorkton, Canada, in 1904. He lived there for one year, then returned to his old neighborhood.

In 1916, he with his mother and eldest brother, Ross, moved to a farm south of Stuart, where they lived for two years.

On Feb. 20, 1918 he was united in marriage with Helen Lydia Hoeness. They began housekeeping the same year in the home near Pitzer in which they have since resided.

Three children were born to this union, two: Katherine Caroline and Ralph Wallace, with his wife, survive.

He leaves to mourn also three sisters, and two brothers, Mrs. Ella Booth, Mrs. Emma Dillemuth and Edgar Williams all of Detroit, Michigan, Mrs. Blanche Elkins of Madelia, Minnesota, and Taylor Williams of Ashland, Oregon, also nieces, nephews, and cousins.

His parents, one brother, Ross, and one sister, Jennie, preceded him in death.

He united with the Presbyterian church at Menlo in youth. He transferred his membership to the United Presbyterian church at Pitzer, when he moved to this vicinity and remained a most faithful and loyal worker.

On Nov. 12, 1933, under the pastorate of Rev. W. C. Porter, he was ordained and installed as elder and as such was most faithful and efficient.

He was most patient during his suffering and long illness.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Pitzer church conducted by Rev. Peter Bock of Earlham and assisted by Rev. William Mack of Des Moines. Burial was in the Jackson township cemetery.
