NOAH HIATT DIED THURSDAY AT PERU

Long-Time Resident Born Near Peru in Early Days of County

Noah Webster Hiatt, a well-known and highly respected citizen of Peru, died at his home there last Thursday at the age of 81 years. He had been ill about three weeks.

Mr. Hiatt's life spanned almost the entire history of Madison county. When he was born here, of pioneer parents, on Dec. 3, 1857, the first settlements in the county were just getting established. He was the son of Jesse and Rebecca Hiatt. With the exception of two years in California, and two in Missouri, his entire life was spent in and near Peru.

He was united in marriage to Nancy Alice Douglas of Truro on March 16, 1881. They were the parents of three children, Versa, Bain and Crell. The wife died in 1901, and the son, Crell, in 1925.

On March 9, 1910, he was married to Jennie Cunningham of Cheyenne Wells, Wyo. She died in 1931.

Mr. Hiatt had been a member of the Christian church since boyhood.

He is survived by a son, Bain R. Hiatt; a daughter, Mrs. L. A. Hamand; and a brother, S. L. Hiatt; all of Peru; two sisters, Mrs. O. D. Silverthorn of Orient, and Malinda Hiatt of Clarinda; in addition to eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held from the Peru church last Friday in charge of the pastor, the Rev. J. H. Machlan. burial was made in the Peru cemetery.
