BRUCE CROFT - Killed in France 1918

Bruce C. Croft, son of Ross E. and Nancy Croft, was born in Winterset, May 16, 1897. His boyhood and young manhood were spent in Winterset where he attended the public schools.

When 16 years old, he joined the Winterset company of National Guards. After serving two years, he went to Des Moines and received his discharge. After a few months in Des Moines, he returned to Winterset and at the beginning of the war, he was one of the first to enlist in Co. A, 168th Infantry, in April, 1917, and went with the company to Des Moines Aug. 17 and left for Camp Mills, Sept. 9th, sailing for France Oct. 18th and then returned to New York and sailed again the 14th of November. He went with the rest of the company to France. In a few months they were sent to the front. Bruce was killed in his first engagement.

Funeral services were held on Sunday morning in the Baptist church conducted by Rev. George D. Rogers with burial in the Winterset cemetery.
