ABNER BELL

Abner Bell, son of Abner and Mercy Bell, was born in Piqua county, Ohio, May 28, 1829. When he was five years old, his parents moved to Mt. Blanchard, Ohio, where he grew to young manhood.

He was married to Miss Mary Jane Crossley in 1849 at Findlay, Ohio, and the following day he and his young bride started for Iowa. The young couple located in Madison county, where they made their home.

During their pioneer days, Mr. Bell served as school teacher, lawyer, miller and on several occasions, he occupied the pulpit as a lay preacher in the Methodist church. For forty years he was a class leader of the church at Patterson and helped build the first church at that place.

All of Father Bell's family have preceded him in death, except one sister, Mrs. Mary Crossley of Friend, Nebr. His wife died 17 years ago, on March 12, 1904. To them had been born eleven children as follows: Mrs. Irena B. Dorrance of Fairmont, Nebr.; Mrs. Sarah Jane Gillogly of Patterson; Hannah J. Bell, who died in infancy; John Charles Fremont, who died at 21 years of age; Mrs. Josephine Darnes of Harper, Kans.; Mrs. Dorcas Brown of Earlham; George W. Bell of Findlay, Ohio; Mrs. Elizabeth Miller of Patterson; Ernest Elwood Bell, who died when a child; Ralph Eugene Bell of Patterson; Mrs. Mabel Huston of Moorcroft, Wyo. Besides these children there are 24 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren and many friends who mourn their loss.

Burial was at Montpelier cemetery, Crawford township.
