FRED ALLEN DIES OF BLAST INJURIES

County Road Worker Suffers Fatal Injuries in Dynamite Explosion

Fred C. Allen of Winterset, veteran Madison county road employe, died at the Winterset hospital Wednesday noon as the result of injuries sustained in a dynamite blast Monday.

Allen had been working with a road crew that was doing some dynamiting south of Patterson. They had been having som trouble with the caps. Allen had planted a half stick and attempted to discharge it, but apparently mistook a sound made by the fuse as a discharge of the cap. Apparently thinking the cap faulty he went to investigate, and the dynamite exploded, shattering his right arm and shoulder.

He was taken to the Winterset hospital where his arm was amputated Tuesday night. Complications developed and he died the next morning.

Mr. Allen was a life-long resident of this community and was widely-known throughout the county. He was 46 years of age. For the past 20 years he had been doing township and county road work.

He is survived by his wife and nine children. The children are Myron, Maxine, Herbert, Francene, May, Lucille, Evelyn, Jack and Roy. He also leaves his father, Elmer Allen of Winterset; a sister, Mrs. Eliza Hendricks of Winterset; and four brothers, Charles, Hiram, Millard and Frank Allen all of Winterset.

Funeral arrangements had not been definitely completed as the Madisonian went to press Wednesday afternoon, but the services will be held here on Friday.
