Alice A. Smith Phillips was born in Linn county, Iowa, March 1, 1856 and passed away at her home near St. Charles, Jan. 30, 1917, aged 60 years, 10 months and 29 days.
She moved, with her parents to Mahaska county, where she resided until her marriage to J. S. Phillips, Aug. 26, 1879. To this union was born one child, Mrs. Carrie Douglas. In 1885, they moved to Madison county, where they made their home until the present time.
She united with the Christian church when 16 years of age, and has ever since been a devoted member. For the past eight years she has been a constant sufferer, but through it all she was patient, gentle and very considerate of others. Everything that loving hands could do, was done to accomplish her recovery. She was conscious until the last, and expressed her willingness to go, and asked all of those present to meet her in Heaven. Then, when she had bade them goodbye, she calmly went to rest.
Her mother preceded her eight years ago today. She leaves to mourn her loss, a devoted husband, loving daughter, two sisters, two brothers, four grand children and also other relatives and many friends.

Mrs. John S. Phillips died at her home south of town last Tuesday morning. The funeral was held at the Christian church Thursday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Viola Eiston, of Woodbine, and was laid to rest in the St. Charles cemetery.
Mrs. Phillips had been in poor health for many years. She was about 60 years of age. She leaves a husband and one daughter, Mrs. Fred Douglas, of Ohio township.
