Thursday, January 26, 1911Death of Mrs. Terrence O'Laughlin
Mrs. Terrence O'Laughlin died at her home just west of the city last Sunday afternoon after a brief illness. Her health had been on the decline for the past year or so and the end was hastened by a severe attack of the grippe. The family are old residents in this county, having lived in Jackson township prior to their removing to the place known as the Norris farm, just west of the fair grounds. It was the writer's privilege to know the deceased intimately for many years. She was a woman of splendid worth, devoted to her family, loyal and true to friends and kind and sympathetic to all.
She is survived by the husband, four daughters, Mrs. Mary Rutledge, who lives in Minnesota, Mrs. Agnes Hogan of Des Moines, Winifred and Delia who live at home, also three three sons, Thomas and Robert of this place and Matthias, who is an ordained priest in the Catholic church and a member of the Davenport diocese.
Funeral services were held at St. Joseph's church in this city Tuesday and the family accompanied the body to Jaynesville, Minn., for burial. This was the girlhood home of the deceased and it was her request that she be laid to rest beside her parents at that place.

Obituary
On the 22d of January occurred the death of one of the pioneers of Madison County, a lady respected, loved and revered by all who knew her. Born in Ireland, December 26, 1846, she received her early training and education among the fair hills of holy Ireland and from the first, drank in these deep lessons of beautiful faith, coming to her from the purple tombs of her martyred forefathers.
At an early age she left Ireland, home and fatherland, she saw the rocky headline on her girlhood days fade forever in mist, but with a brave heart she looked hopefully to the promised land of Erin’s exiled children, Columbia. She ever kept the faith of Ireland’s brave sons and fearless daughters who when they could not adore in church built altars on the mountain slopes or in caves. (Poem follows).
Her faith was not broken, it was the beacon light that ever kept her in the path of rectitude and honor. Married June 11, 1868 at Fond du Lac, Wis., hers was the type of a Christian wife and mother. Heaven alone was the height of her ambition, the goal of all her aspirations, and with this one view of life, her sole care was to bring up her children in the fear and love of God.
Her greatest wish in life was to see one of her sons enter the sanctuary of the Lord, there to offer sacrifice for her, when God the Father should unroll her soul from its mortal coil. God blessed that wish and gave her a son, who is now a priest in the Davenport diocese at the Red Heart Cathedral. On the morning of his ordination, she could cheerfully say, “now thou dost dismiss thy servant in peace, O Lord”.
The closing scene, her death, was but the reflection of her saintly life, the joy of her soul beaming through her eyes as she received the last Sacrament of the church and calmly, sweetly gently breathed forth her soul into the hands of its maker.
The funeral rites took place, Tuesday morning at St. Joseph’s Church at 10 o’clock. Solemn Requiem High Mass was sung. The celebrant was Rev. Father O’Laughlin, deacon, Rev. Father McCann; sub-deacon, Rev. Father Dugan; master of ceremonies, Fathers Minch and Larkin. The funeral services were most impressive and left a lasting impression on the minds of all present. The music was beautifully rendered by a Des Moines Choir, during the epistle, that awe-inspiring, soul stirring masterpiece of Gregorian music, the Dies Irac, was sung. After the mass, Father Molyneaux preached a touching eulogy on the deceased lady, then Father O’Laughlin gave the absolution.
The remains were then taken to Janesville, Minn., for burial where mass was celebrated by Father O’Laughlin at St. Ann’s Church at 10:30. Interment took place at Janesville cemetery.
Surviving the deceased are her husband, Terrence O’Laughlin; several children, Thomas, Robert, Winifred and Delia of Winterset; Mrs. J. J. Hogan, formerly of Des Moines, Mrs. Mary Rutledge of Murdoch, Minn. and Father Matthias of Davenport, besides two sisters and one brother; Mrs. P. Ford of Janesville, Minn., Mrs. P. McLaughlin of Minneapolis, Minn., Robert Crystal of Janesville Minn.
The priests present were: fathers O’Laughlin of Davenport, Mench of St. Mary’s, Dugan of St. Patrick’s Irish settlement, Molyneaux of Des Moines, McCann of Newton, Larkin of St. Ambrose, Des Moines and Troy of Winterset.
