Earlham, Iowa
Thursday, June 1, 1911Mr. E. V. Hennen passed away at the Methodist hospital in Des Moines, May 27, 1911 being 72 years 11 months and 14 days of age, having been a sufferer for a number of years.
Through all of his sufferings, however, he looked ever to Christ his Savior, who seemed ever near as he lived such a consistent Christian life that at all times and places it was possible for him to go to his Savior. It is said "worth alone is not determined by words alone but by deeds". Surely the deeds of this man shall stand as stars to guide weary travelers in years to come.
E. V. Hennen was born in Ohio, June 13, 1838, and was united in marriage to Ann P. Jones, Jan. 29, 1862. The first few years of married life were spent in Illinois. In 1865 the couple moved to Iowa which state has since been their home. To this union five children were born, two dying in infancy and three now living; Mrs. Wm. Mendenhall, Mrs. George Piatt of Earlham and George Hennen of Adel, who were present during the sickness and death of their parent. Twelve grandchildren and a host of friends are also left to mourn the loss of this kind father, loving grandfather and neighbor, his wife having passed to her reward April 17, 1910.
About 43 years ago Mr. Hennen grew weary of the ways of the world and since that time has ever lived a faithful life for Christ. He joined the M.E. Church at Penn Center shortly after his conversion, of which church he has since been an active worker, doing at all times what he could to bring those whom he associated with to Christ and also always helpful to those who needed help.
During the past year he has several times mentioned his willingness and desire to go home, saying a much better home awaited him above than this world can ever afford as anticipated by the 14th chapter of St. John, which seemed to be one of his many favorite chapters.
His remains were brought to Earlham Sunday and the funeral was held at Penn Center Tuesday at 1 o’clock conducted by Rev. S. L. Boyers. Interment made in the Penn Center cemetery.
