Long-Time Resident Died Thursday at Her Home in Winterset
Mrs. Sidney Smith, a resident of Madison county since childhood, died at her home in Winterset last Thursday at the age of 77 years.
Mrs. Smith was the former Mary Frances Howell, daughter of Nelson and Margaret Howell, and was born at Astoria, Ill., on Oct. 31, 1861. At the age of four years she came with her parents to Iowa. They lived at Des Moines for a year, and afterwards moved to a farm near Patterson where she was reared.
On Oct. 15, 1885, she was married to James Sidney Smith of Jefferson township. They moved to the old homestead, where they lived until the death of her husband in 1935. She then moved to Winterset.
As a child she had affiliated with the Methodist church. As long as her health permitted she was active in its affairs.
Mrs. Smith leaves two sons, Harry H. Smith of Winterset and Ryman J. Smith of Ames; a daughter, Nellie M. of Des Moines; four grandchildren, Esther, Phyllis and Frances of Ames and Harold of Winterset; and one brother and one sister, David and Ida Howell of Patterson.
Funeral rites were held from the Ramsey-Richards funeral home last Saturday, in charge of her pastor, the Rev. J. R. McNichols. Burial was made in the Jefferson cemetery.
