Winterset Madisonian-Winterset, Iowa
September 1916

The community was saddened Friday to learn that death had visited the home of one of its members, spreading its shadow over the home of a woman well beloved, Mrs. W. P. Petty. A sufferer for many months and confined to her bed, she has been patient in affliction, with always a word of appreciation for the little attentions of the neighbors and friends who have come in to cheer her along the painful way of life. But earthly hopes and plans were of no avail and nature took her inevitable course Friday. (d. September 19, 1916)

Mary J. Waddell was born July 19, 1863 at Canton, Ill., departing this life on Sept. 16 at her home east of Earlham, aged 53 years, 1 month and 27 days. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Russell B. Waddell moved to What Cheer, Iowa, when she was one year old, where she resided most of her life. She was married to Wm. Petty Oct. 18, 1881, a union blessed by three daughters, Mamie, Maude and Ren, but the death angel came and took the little girls, Mamie and Maude on the 7th and 14th of October, 1888, when they were but six and four years of age. They with father, mother, and one brother precede Mrs. Petty to the "haven of eternal rest".

(Buried in the Earlham Cemetery)
