J. M. Hobson, a resident of Madison county for nearly fifty years, died on the 18th at Auburn, Nebr., where himself and Mrs. Hobson had gone to spent the winter with two of their children.
Mr. Hobson was born Feb. 3, 1829 in Washington county, Indiana and would have reached his 84th year next month. In 1851 he was married to Sarah Rutherford who died in 1896. They were blessed with eight children; George and Ella, who died some years ago and those remaining are; James of Auburn, Nebr., Henry of Van, Nebr., Phillip of Des Moines and three daughters, Mrs. Jennie Codey, Mrs. Mary Schultz and Mrs. Hattie Pooler, all of Winterset. In 1901, Mr. Hobson was again married to Mrs. A. M. Robertson who survives him.
Mr. Hobson enlisted in the War of the Rebellion with the 50th Indiana regiment in 1861, served nearly four years and was mustered out of service in September of 1865. He was severely wounded at the battle of Jenkins' Ferry, Arkansas in 1864. At the close of the war, October 1865, he came to Madison county, his wife having accompanied her parental family, the Rutherfords, who came here from Clarke county, Indiana in 1864.
Since early life he was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church, was devoted to the work of the church and Sunday school and ably served the church in various official capacities. He was highly respected as a citizen and was devoted and unselfish to his family and neighbors. As a friend in need during sickness or bereavement, he was a good Samaritan indeed and his memory will be kindly cherished by many.
