Obituary - Nathaniel Winship

Nathaniel Winship was born near Phillips, Franklin county, Maine, May 22, 1836 and died at his home in Winterset, June 5, 1913, aged 77 years and 13 days. He moved from Maine to Castle Rock, Wis., in 1858. He enlisted Sept. 7, 1861 in Co. K12th Wisconsin Regiment and was honorably discharged July 16, 1865. While home on a furlough, he was married to Elizabeth Martin McLaughlin, April 19, 1864. To them were born three children, two sons, Charles and Henry and one daughter, Miss Nellie, all of whom are now living in Madison county.

At the close of the war he moved to Rochester, Iowa, where he lived about six months. In the spring of 1866, he moved to a farm near St. Charles, Madison county, where he has since resided except from 1907 to 1909 when he was in Labelte county, Kansas. When he returned from Kansas the family came to Winterset where his last days were spent.

Mr. Winship was a member of the M. E. church at St. Charles. He has been more or less in poor health for 34 years and especially not well for the past few years. For that reason, he has not been able to enjoy church privileges or the associations of society as he would like to have done.

The funeral services were held in the Presbyterian church at 2:30 Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. W. G. Hohanshelt, pastor of the M. E. church.
