February 7, 1912Richard C. Newton was born in Jasper county, Iowa June 27, 1852 and departed this life Jan. 25, 1912 at the age of 59 years, 5 months and 28 days. On April 17, 1878 in Nevada, Story county, he was united in marriage to Louisa J. Mullen. To this union were born a daughter and two sons, the daughter preceeding him to the better land eleven years ago. The wife, two sons, C. L. and Glen, and two grandsons and three brothers and four sisters remain to mourn the loss of their loved one. One sister, Mrs. James Mumford of Woodburn, also a nephew Charles Gamble and niece, Mrs. Sherman of Maxwell were present. In 1894 he was converted and became a member of the Baptist church, in which belief he was raised from early childhood. Always a lover of home and setting an example of honesty and industry, never thinking of himself, but ever thinking of the welfare of others, he carried this thought all through his last illness. Being confined to his bed for over seven weeks he bore his suffering with almost superhuman patience. He said "I would like to live, but God knows best".
The funeral was held at the home in Lincoln township, conducted by L. F. Davis. Interment in the Rock City cemetery at Winterset.
