Death of Mrs. Moody

Mrs. Mary S. Moody, widow of Israel Moody, passed away on last Friday night at the home of her daughter, Mrs. May M. Hillis at 3960 Wyoming St., St. Louis. (d. 12-28-1911). Mrs. Moody was past 82 years old and quite feeble but was in usual health, when retiring Friday evening. She peacefully passed away during the night and her death was not discovered until the next morning. The body was brought here on New Year's day and burial made in the family lot in the Winterset cemetery.

The Moody's were among the pioneer settlers of this county, emigrating here from Ohio in the fall of 1855, at which time they purchased 600 acres of land near Patterson. They moved back to Ohio, but five years later, returned to Winterset and were residents of this county for nearly fifty years.

Mrs. Moody, Aged Winterset Pioneer Dies in St. Louis Home.

The body of Mrs. Mary Moody, an old time resident of Winterset was brought here for burial Monday, the funeral services being held at the Baptist Church, Rev. Stewart preaching the funeral sermon.

Mrs. Moody lived with her daughter, Mrs. May Hillis. She had been in feeble health a number of years. She retired Friday night in apparent good health and was found dead in bed the next morning.

Mrs. Moody lived in and near Winterset many years, coming here six years after her marriage in Ohio to Israel Moody in 1850. Her husband was many years a prominent business man in Winterset. Later they moved to the farm near the fair grounds, returning to the town in 1893. She has made her home with her only child, Mrs. May Hillis, in Kansas City and St. Louis in recent years. She was over eighty years old.

Mrs. Moody was known to all older residents of the county. She was somewhat eccentric, a talented woman in many ways and one of the kindest that ever lived. She was a model housekeeper, and she was dearly loved by her intimate friends and old neighbors. She was a sister of John and Dr. Leonard, and Mrs. B. Thrift. Mrs. Hillis and daughter Edith accompanied the body here.
