Mrs. Mary J. Griswold

Mary Jane Witherow was born Oct. 2, 1839 near Seneca, Ohio. She was married to Martin Griswold, in January 1860. They resided in Ohio until the spring of 1865, when they emigrated to this state, locating on a farm near the present site of Macksburg, in this county. They continued to live in that locality until the spting of 1871, at which time they removed to the farm which has since been the Griswold homesead and where she died on Jan. 8th, aged 76 years, 3 months and 6 days. To this union five children were born: two of these, John A. and Emma J. are deceased. The other three, David M., Edmund B., and Francis J., remain and were with the mother in her last sickness. The husband and father died Dec. 14, 1880.

Mrs. Griswold united with the M. E. church and remained steadfast in her faith to the end. She was a woman of generous impulses and steadfast and constant in her friendship. She was a most devoted and loving mother and no sacrifice was too great for those she loved and served. Her patience in her last sickness was most remarkable; not a murmur or complaint passing her lips during the entire time. The end came gradually and peacefully, as one who wraps her draperies abour her and lies down to sleep and the spirit returned to the Master who gave it.

Funeral was conducted by Rev. Edward E. Garrett, Jan. 10th at 2 o'clock at Penn Center church and she was laid to rest in the Penn Center cemetery.
