Had Served in Winterset Library for Nearly Twenty Years
Gertrude Sumner, last surviving member of a family well known and highly respected in this community for many years, died at her home in Winterset Monday night after an extended period of failing health.
Miss Sumner was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Sumner, and was born in Illinois. At an early age she came to Madison county with her parents, and the remainder of her life was spent in the Winterset community.
Her early life was spent on the Sumner homestead just north of Winterset. Later she was employed as assistant librarian at the Winterset public library, serving in that capacity for nearly 20 years. She was a member of the Winterset Presbyterian church.
She was the only daughter in a family of three sons, and she is the last member of the family. Nearest known relative is a nephew, Leon Sumner, of Kennard, Nebr.
Funeral services were held this Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. from the Richards funeral home, in charge of the Rev. F. Don Worden, pastor of the Winterset Baptist church. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
