Had Published St. Charles News in That Community for 37 Years
P. S. Wise, St. Charles newspaper publisher and jeweler, died at his home there last Thursday, April 14, after a brief illness. He was 80 years of age.
Mr. Wise was the oldest business man in St. Charles, coming there in 1891 to enter the jewelry business. About 1893, he entered the newspaper business, starting the old St. Charles Hawkeye, which he published for about six years before selling out. In 1909, the Hawkeye having moved to other fields, Mr. Wise started the St. Charles News. He published the news for 37 years before retiring in 1946. He also conducted a jewelry business in St. Charles through the years.
He was a member of the Masonic lodge, in which he would have received 50 year honors in one more year. He was affiliated with Eastern Star, the Methodist church, the St. Charles Lions club, and had served as mayor of his town.
Born at Princeton, Ill., on March 31, 1871, he was a son of William and Catherine Wise. When he was 6 years old he came with his parents to Warren county, where his early life was spent, and where he was educated at Simpson college.
He was married to Sylvia Williams in 1898. Their only child, a son, died in infancy, and the wife and mother died in 1900. In 1901 he married Marie Bussing of Des Moines and she died in 1936. In 1937 he married Rose E. Fulton of St. Charles, who survives him.
Funeral services were held Sunday from his home in St. Charles, in charge of the Rev. Oren Hall. Burial was made in the St. Charles cemetery.
