HUGH STEELE RITES HELD LAST FRIDAY

Mt. Ayr Superintendent Had Spent Quarter Century in Education

Funeral services for Hugh H. Steele, former Winterset school teacher, were held last Friday from the auditorium in the Mt. Ayr high school, where he had been superintendent of schools since 1943.

The services were held in charge of the Rev. Frank Moore, of the Mt. Ayr Methodist church, assisted by the Rev. Mr. Reel, pastor of the Mt. Ayr Christian church. The obituary was read by Henry Miller of Winterset. Burial was made in the Mt. Ayr cemetery.

Mr. Steele had been in the educational field for a quarter century. He started teaching from 1923 to 1925, in the rural schools of Taylor and Ringgold counties. He then joined the Mt. Ayr faculty as an instructor in the junior high school for three years. He left there to come to Winterset as principal of the junior high school, in which position he served for 14 years. He returned to Mt. Ayr in 1942 as high school principal, and was elected to the superintendency of the Mt. Ayr schools in 1943.

He joined the Church of Christ in Winterset during the pastorate of the Rev. H. L. Olmstead. He later transferred to the Christian church at Mt. Ayr. He was a member of the Masonic lodge and Order of eastern Star. During his residence in Winterset, he was an active Rotarian.

He received his B. A. degree from Iowa State Teachers' college at Cedar Falls, and in 1944 obtained his M. S. degree in education from Drake university in Des Moines. At that time he was elected to Kappa Delta Pi honorary educational fraternity at Drake.
