HELEN BALDWIN FOSTER

Helen Baldwin Foster, daughter of Abram and Belle Whitcomb Baldwin, was born in Oberon, North Dakota on December 23, 1897.

Her early school years were spent in Oberon and her high school years in Colorado Springs.

Following high school she attended Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, a private teacher’s kindergarten school in Chicago and the Drake University of Des Moines.

Helen did social work in Birmingham, Alabama and later taught in the public school of Reno, Nevada and Dallas, Texas. In 1926 she accepted a teaching position in Earlham and on August 29, 1927 she married Gladstone Foster.

Her interest in children was expressed through her work as Children’s Superintendent of Sunday School in the First Presbyterian church of which she was a member, and her many years of teaching in the public schools of Earlham, De Soto, and Dexter.

Helen’s special interests included pride in her pioneer heritage expressed through her membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution, and her great love of nature.

Helen and Gladstone retired to Wesley acres in Des Moines in 1965 but frequently enjoyed their visits to Earlham with old friends. While wintering in Phoenix, Arizona Helen became ill, but was most happy to return to their home in Des Moines on January 7. She passed away quite suddenly the following afternoon at Wesley acres.

She is survived by her husband, Gladstone, her brothers, Ben and Jeff Baldwin, one nephew and one niece.

Note: Husband's obit lists Helen's date of death as January 8, 1971.
