Benjamin S. Henry, a resident of Winterset for over 50 years, died at Madison County Hospital, Sunday, January 9, at the age of 86 years, 5 months, and 3 days.
Mr. Henry was born in Jackson township, Madison county, Iowa on August 6, 1885, the son of Emanuel P. Henry and Malinda Jane Allen Henry. He lived on the farm where he was born until 1920, when he was appointed a rural mail carrier. He moved to Winterset March 1 of the same year where he served the mail service for 27 years and 8 months.
He was united as a member of the early Chapel church in 1904 and later transferred his membership to the United Methodist church in Winterset.
He was united in marriage in July of 1907 to Mary Clark and to this union was born three sons, Orville Henry of Earlham; Harold L. Henry of Davenport, Iowa; and Edwin Henry, who was killed in action while serving in the Navy during World War II on November 12, 1944.
He was later married, in Ackley, Iowa to Marie Schonich in June of 1927. To this union was born one son, Dwayne Henry of San Diego, California, and daughter, Wanda Jean, who died at birth. Marie preceded him in death in October 1970.
Two brothers and one sister preceded him in death also.
Mr. Henry leaves to mourn 3 sons, 11 grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Friday, January 14, at the United Methodist church in Winterset with Rev. Newton Coughenour officiating. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
Those attending the services from out of town were Dwayne Henry and wife from San Diego, California; Harold Henry and wife Elenor Fowler from Davenport, Tom Henry from Moline, Illinois, and Earl Henry from Onida, South Dakota.
