July 1949MARY ALICE STANDING
Mary Alice Standing, daughter of Alfred A. and Rebecca Nicholson, was born in England at Stockton-on-Tees, March 25, 1805 and passed away July 4th, 1949, rather suddenly, at the home of her son Arthur at Primghar, Iowa, at the age of 84 years, three months and 10 days. She had been in ill health for some time and for the past week had not been so well but her condition was not considered serious.
She came to America with her parents in 1887. They settled at Rochester, New York and she lived there until her marriage to Charles Standing in 1893. They settled on a farm in Dallas county about four miles north of Earlham where they remained until his death in 1936. She then made her home with her son, Arthur and wife. When they moved to Primghar about a year ago, she accompanied them and remained there until the time of her passing.
Three sons and four daughters came to bless the home, all of whom survive her. She was a devoted wife and a loving mother. Her life was spent chiefly in the service of others.
Alice Standing was a birthright member of the Society of Friends and remained loyal to this Faith throughout her life. She was a member of Bear Creek Conservative Meeting and was ever a faithful attender as long as her health permitted.
She leaves to mourn her passing all seven of her children, Arthur Standing and Amy Haworth of Primghar, Iowa; Alice Johnson of Oskaloosa, Iowa; Bernard and Albert of Earlham; Elsie Osborn of Dexter, Iowa; and Eva Plagman of Peterson, Iowa; one brother, Arthur Nicholson of Haddonfield, New Jersey; two sisters, Maria Yole of Appalachie, Virginia; an Francis Standing of Beaumont, California; eighteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren, besides many other relatives and friends.
An early morning service was held at the Arthur Standing home at Primghar but the main service was held at the Friends meeting house north of Earlham at 4:00 o'clock Wednesday afternoon. Burial was in the Bear Creek cemetery.
