Elza Cook, 93 Died Sunday

Levi Elza Cook, 93, lifelong resident of this community, died Sunday afternoon at the Garwood Nursing home in Dexter. He had been in failing health for some time and had only recently returned to the home from the Dexter hospital.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Bear Creek Friends church with Rev. Lawrence Sams in charge, assisted by L. Willard Reynolds and Rev. Paul Hadley. Interment was in the Bear Creek cemetery.

Levi Elza Cook, son of Elkanah and Elizabeth Walton Cook was born on a farm a short distance west of the Bear Creek church January 6, 1860. He grew to young manhood in this community, and on January 6, 1880 he was married to Tacy H. Craven, daughter of Ashley and Huldah Craven. To this union two children were born—Elkanah S. and Lillian. On November 22, 1893, the wife and mother was suddenly stricken and the family left motherless.

On December 1, 1894 Elza Cook was married to Urana Wilson Kenworthy, but on May 13, 1902 she too was called to her home above and again the family was left without a mother.

On January 1, 1906 he was married to Jennie Crosswait. They journeyed their sunset years together until February 8, 1943 when Jennie answered the summons home. Since then Elza has lived alone most of the time.

He was a man of strong character. He was a member of the Bear Creek Friends church for many years, and was faithful at Sunday School and worship services as long as health permitted. He attended the Bear Creek school when a child, and never lost his love for the old school day friends. He was ever ready to lend a helping hand to those in need.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Earlham and highly respected by the members of the Order as well as the entire community.

His entire life was spent near Bear Creek or Earlham with the exception of a few years in Kansas and Omaha.

He had been in failing health for some time and on the afternoon of August 2, 1953 he quietly slipped away at the Garwood Nursing home in Dexter at the age of 93 years and seven months.

He is survived by his son, E. S. Cook of Kiona, Washington, two grandchildren, Elza Lee Cook and Wilma Kronemeyer, five great grandchildren, and one sister, Eva Freer of Joplin, Missouri. He is also survived by nephews and nieces who loved and respected Uncle Elza.

On May 24, 1953, his only daughter, Lillian Fillmore passed away. He felt this loss keenly—perhaps even more—because of his advanced age and weakened condition. Two brothers, William and Edward Cook and two sisters, Huldah Kenworthy and Deborah Dailey also preceded him in death.
