JOHN THORNTON DIES AT 85 YEARS

Winterset Man Had Been Invalid for Last 17 Years

John Thornton, an invalid resident of Winterset for the last 11 years, died at his home on South Fifth avenue Wednesday, May 4, at the age of 85 years.

Mr. Thornton was a native of Bloomington, Wisc., where he was born Aug. 23, 1863, the son of John and Ann Thornton. He was married Sept. 27, 1892, to Fannie I. Lhommedieu. They were the parents of three children, one of whom, Eliza, died at the age of 12 years. His wife also preceded him in death.

His early married life was spent at Colo, where he became a member of the Regorganized Church of Chirst of Latter Day Saints. Later he was ordained an elder in the church.

He moved to Diagonal in 1920, living there for 18 years before coming to Winterset. During the last 17 years of his life he was confined to a wheel chair.

Surviving are his daughter, Mary Estella, with whom he made his home here; a son, Reuby John Thornton of Wichita, Kan., two grandsons; two brothers, James Thornton of Colo and Will Thornton of Bloomington, Wis.; and a sister, Mrs. Agnes Handy of Mason City.

Funeral services were held last Friday at Colo, in charge of Asa Smith of Winterset. Burial was made at Colo.
