JAMES E. POWERS DIES

James E. Powers, Madison county, farmer, died at his home in Monroe township, Wednesday afternoon, April 26th at the age of 70 years. Mr. Powers had been in poor health for the past four years and was critically ill, the past two weeks with spleen trouble.

The Rev. A. R. Weed, pastor of the West Star and Worthington churches, conducted his funeral services at the home, south of Winterset, Friday, April 28th at 2 o'clock. The body was taken to Meridosha, Illinois, the former home of the Powers and short services were held at the cemetery Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock.

Mr. Powers was the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Powers and was born December 8, 1862 near Jacksonville, Illinois. He came to Madison county with his family in 1907 and this community has since been his home.

On July 21, 1887, he was married to Miss Lilah Russell and they were the parents of nine children. His widow and children surviving are Clarence of Oskaloosa, Hilton and Phillip at home, Blanche Speers of McChanicburg, Pennsylvania, Georgia Veach of Chicago, Miss Marie of Des Moines, Helen Wilson of Ames and Elvina Roby of Truro. A son Ray died when he was sixteen years of age.

Mr. Powers was a member of the Lorimor Methodist church. His widow, Mrs. and Mrs. Phillip Powers, Clarence Powers and son Cliff, Miss Marie Powers of Des Moines, Hylton Powers of Winteset, Mrs. Georgia Veach of Chicago accompanied the body to Illinois where burial was made. They returned here Monday afternoon.
