Mr. John Lenz, son of George Lenz and Elizabeth Schliesser was born on June 20, 1878 in Orieshaussen, Germany and departed this life at his home southwest of Van Meter early on Friday morning, January 21. He was baptized in early infancy in the Lutheran faith, and at the age of 13 was confirmed in the same faith. Soon after his confirmation he left his native land and came, together with his parents and one brother to the United States, locating in Jefferson township, Madison county, Iowa. A sister remained in Germany. Both she and his only brother preceded him in death.

He worked as a hired hand at various places until he was married, from which time on he farmed for himself. He was a resident of Jefferson township for no less than 57 years, and occupied his home place 45 years.

He was united in holy wedlock on November 23, 1902 to Miss Louise Niendorf, the ceremony being performed by the Rev. H. Kahre at the Carl Niendorf home in Des Moines. This happy union was blessed with the birth of two daughters and one son. But it pleased the Lord to take his helpmate from his side early in life. Her death occurred on October 20, 1918. Being aided particularly by his oldest daughter, Mrs. Henrietta Jamison he carried on. She was devoted to him and made him a happy home to the very last. Mr. Lenz’s health had always been excellent until the year 1947 when he became afflicted with malta fever. After a rather lengthy convalescence, he seemed to enjoy a fair state of health once again. So it came as a very unexpected shock indeed when it was found that his earthly pilgrimage had been suddenly terminated in the midst of a peaceful night’s sleep. He brought his age to 70 years and seven months and one day.

Being the kind and loving father that he always was, his passing naturally is a severe blow to his children. But the fellow members of his church likewise feel his loss very keenly. He ever proved himself to be both a loyal and an active member of his church. For many years he served as an officer of the congregation. He served several terms as a trustee, and likewise several terms as secretary and treasurer.

He is survived by his daughters, Mrs. Henrietta Jamison of Van Meter and Mrs. Marie Hartz of Booneville; his son Louis of Algona, Iowa and seven grandchildren.

Those from a distance who were here to attend the funeral of Mr. John Lenz which was held last Sunday were Mrs. Lydia Wagner and sons, Henry and Paul and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Goltz and children, Melvin and Marlene of Janesville, Minnesota, Mr. John Lenz and Mrs. Louise horn of Wolsey, South Dakota and Mr. and Mrs. Louie Lenz and daughters, Jean, Helen and Pauline of Algona, Iowa.
