Earlham--(Special)--Mrs. Roy Moreland, well known Earlham and Madison county resident, died Saturday night, Jan. 1st at the Methodist hospital in Des Moines, after an extended illness. Mrs. Moreland was 53 years of age.
The Rev. S. R. Overholser conducted her funeral services at the Methodist church in Earlham Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 4th, and burial was made in the Earlham cemetery.
Mrs. Moreland who was the former Hortense Clements, was raised in the Worthington neighborhood, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. O. Clements.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Moreland is survived by their daughter, Helen. She also leaves her mother, Mrs. C. O. Clements of Earlham and five sisters, Mrs. Julia Hadley of California, Mrs. Elma Duff of Des Moines, Mrs. Laura Hays, Mrs. Emily Price, and Mrs. Lucile Moore, all of the Earlham community.

Hortense Clements Moreland, daughter of C. O. and Ora Haxton Clements, was born in Madison county, Iowa, October 25th, 1895, and departed this life January 1, 1949, at the age of 53 years, two months, and seven days.
After completing grade school at Worthington, she attended Earlham high school, graduating with the class of 1914. From 1914 to 1918, she taught in the rural schools of Madison county. Being a conscientious teacher, she ws much admired by both pupils and parents.
Early in life, she united with the Methodist church, and during the years gave of her time in the work of the W.S.C.S.
On February 6, 1918, she was united in marriage with Royal H. Moreland. To this union was born one daughter, Helen Lucile. The first few years of their married life were spent on a farm in the Worthington community; since 1929, they have resided in Earlham. For the past five years, they have shared their home with her aged mother, Mrs. C. O. Clements.
Hortense was a devoted wife and mother, and her main interest centered aroung her home.
She was one of a family of ten, having been preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.
In addition to her husband and daughter, she leaves her aged mother and five sisters--Mrs. W. E. Hadley of Glendale, California; Mrs. Glen Alexander of Des Moines; Mrs. G. M. Hays, Mrs. W. F. Price, and Mrs. Guy Moore, all of Earlham.
