Earlham Echo - January 1949
Earlham, Iowa

Edmond Samuel Compton, second son of Sylvanus and Sarah Compton was born June 28, 1875 on a farm near Earlham, Iowa and passed away at his home January 22, 1949 at the age of 73 years.

He received his early education in the rural schools of Earlham community and graduated from Business Course in the Ackworth Academy, Ackworth, Iowa.

At the age of 21 he united with the Friends church of Earlham and remained a member of this organization until the time of his death.

On January 31, 1900 he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Barnett; to this union four children were born. One son and three daughters. After their marriage they resided on a farm east of Earlham. After a year on the farm they moved to town where he associated with various business interests. For a time he was in the grocery business, later transferring to the hardware merchindise, in which he continued as long as his health permitted.

Edd will be missed from the busi-life of our town. He believed in his work and gave it his best to make it a success. He stood for the principles of truth and honesty and made them a part of his daily life. No more we see him going to work while some were still asleep. No more will we hear his cheery greetings. He had finished his work and like a tired traveler lies down to peaceful rest.

He was a home-loving man. His greatest delight was when his children and grandchildren were gathered about the parental fireside. He loved their childish pratter. He loved to see them romp and play. He sat before them an example of uprightness and left for them a heritage greater than silver and gold--a good name.

He leaves in sorrow his faithful and loyal companion, his four children, Marion O. of Earlham; Esther of Lansing, Michigan; Mrs. Raymond DeLay of Boone and Alice of Rockford, Illinois. Three sisters, Mrs. Anna Barnett of Des Moines; Mrs. Minnie Fuller of Battle Creek, Michigan; and Mrs. Grant Shifflett of Diagonal, Iowa. Two brothers, Nate of Cottage Grove, Oregon and Silas of Earlham. Nine grandchildren, other relatives and host of friends.

(Burial was made in the Earlham cemetery)
