HOMER LEO ROSS

Homer Leo Ross, son of James Arthur and Anna Belle Ross, was born December 28, 1890, at LeRoy, Iowa, and departed this life October 20, 1972, at Maple Lin Manor in Earlham at the age of 81 years, 9 months and 22 days.

On September 28, 1913, he was united in marriage to Verna Merl Richard. To this union one son was born.

He started farming at Beach, North Dakota. After a few years he returned to Iowa living on a farm near Humeston before moving to Earlham in 1935 where he continued his farming and livestock operations as long as his health permitted.

He was an active member of the Earlham Methodist church serving on the Official Board and as a Sunday School teacher for many years. He was a fifty year Mason, a Past Master of the Masonic Lodge, and a Worthy Patron of the Eastern Star. He served on the Madison County Memorial Hospital Board, the Farmers Elevator Board, and as President of the Earlham Lion’s Club.

He is survived by his wife, Verna, a son, Donald of Earlham, three grandchildren, James Ross of Earlham, Mrs. Marilyn Jennings of Seattle, Washington, and Mrs. Patricia Altwegg of Dunlap, Iowa; a brother, Hugh Ross of Beach, North Dakota; five great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Services were held at the United Methodist church in Earlham on Monday, October 23, at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. Ward Young officiating. Bernieta Patience was the soloist accompanied by Gretchen Brittain at the organ.

The same obituary appeared in this newspaper with the following addition:

Casket bearers were Ernie Marquardt, Rex Fuller, Avory Wynkoop, Gale Marston, William Martens and Bob Bobst. Honorary bearers were Ralph Hunter, Earl Schalkle, Forrest Hibbs, Orville Wilcox and Frank Wengert. Bob Branam and Paul Marks ushered.

Interment was in the Penn Center cemetery. Evans Service made the arrangements.
