Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Hicks Born in Log Cabin in Scott Township
Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Hicks, a native of Scott township, died Feb. 16 at Sioux City, according to word reaching here this week. She was 93 years of age.
Mrs. Hicks was a daughter of John and Mary Dryden, and was born June 28, 1857, in a log house in Scott township. Her early life was spent in that community. When she as 13 years old her mother died, and she came to Winterset to live with an aunt.
She was married to Z. T. Hicks in 1876. They made their home in Scott township for 38 years, before moving to Orchard, Neb. Her husband died there in 1922. She continued to make her home at Orchard until about eight years ago, when she moved to the home of her son, Bayliss Hicks in Sioux City.
She is survived by five sons, Bayliss and Ray Hicks of Sioux City, Victor Hicks of O'Neill, Neb., Charles Hicks of Orchard, Neb., and Oscar Hicks of Winterset; in addition to 18 grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
