J. M. Eskew
John Milton Eskew was born in Cumberland county, Kentucky, Mar. 24, 1842 and died Nov. 29, 1925. If he had lived until March 24, 1926, he would have been 84 years old.
In the year 1865 he was married to Jane Flower. To this union one daughter was born, Mrs. Mary Snow of Hume, Missouri. In 1880 he was married to Mrs. Elizabeth Lucas. To this union five children were born, two dying in infancy, the other three daughters are Mrs. Della Ferrall, Mrs. Sadie Breeding and Mrs. Carrie Worley, all of Winterset.
The wife, four daughters, eight grand children and two aged sisters are left to mourn his loss. The sisters are Mrs. Mary Carter of Winterset and Mrs. Ellen Garmon of Tingley, Iowa.
He was one of the pioneers of Madison county, Iowa, coming with a party of 30 people who emigrated here from Kentucky in 1861. They came in covered wagons, drove ox teams and brought their cows along. With the passing of the deceased all this company of people are gone, except Mrs. Ann Blair of Conger, Iowa.
He was converted when 19 years old at the Roger school house, in Scott township, under the ministry of E. R. Le Baber. At this time he joined the United Brethren church, continuing faithful in this church to the end of life, being one of the strong pillars of the church on the Patterson charge.
Near the middle of October he went to Hume, Missouri to spend the winter with Mrs. Snow, but had only been there a few days when the final illness came and while he lingered for several weeks and was given care and comfort, the Great Redeemer called him to his reward, Nov. 19, 1925.
Funeral services were held at the home in Winterset, Wednesday, December 2nd at 2 p.m., conducted by Rev. D. J. Shenton assisted by Rev. Fye of Carlisle. The interment was at Blair Chapel cemetery.
