Retired Winterset Harness Merchant was 87 Years of Age
Ernest E. Douglas, retied Winterset harness dealer and life-long resident of Madison county, died at Memorial hospital here Tuesday, Nov. 26. He was 87 years of age, and had been in failing health for several years.
Mr. Douglas was born on a farm near Truro on Aug. 3, 1870, a son of Addison C. and Mary Jane Douglas. He farmed until he was 24 years of age, then bought a harness shop in Truro which he operated until 1897, when he came to Winterset to work in the John Catterlin shop.
Douglas was employed by Catterlin for 25 years, after which he purchased the shop and operated it until his retirement in 1940.
He was married on Oct. 18, 1915, to Bertha Mae Hoare. Her death occurred in 1947.
His nearest surviving relatives are nieces and nephews living in Des Moines, St. Louis and Washington, D.C.
Funeral services will be held this Friday at 2 p.m. from the Richards Funeral home, conducted by the Rev. Warren Hile, pastor of the Winterset Christian church. Burial will be made in the Winterset cemetery.
