Was Winterset Business Man For More than 60 Years
Warren P. Benge, a Winterset business and tradesman for more than 60 years, died in his sleep at his home here early Tuesday morning, Oct 8. He was 88 years of age.
Mr. Benge had lived in the Winterset area since childhood. He was born in Warren county on May 7, 1869, a son of Anderson and Eudora Benge. The family moved to the farm in the Buffalo neighborhood, south of Winterset, when he was a small boy. When he was 10 years old they moved into Winterset where his father engaged in the hardware business.
He attended Winterset schools and graduated from the Winterset high school with the class of 1889. Immediately thereafter he went to work in the tinning, plumbing and heating business, and engaged in that continuously in Winterset for more than 60 years, until his retirement four years ago.
He was married Dec. 19, 1894, at Colfax to Fannie Kiser. They were parents of eight children. One son, Harold, died at the age of two years.
Mr. Benge was active over a long period of years in the affairs of the Winterset Christian church where he was a regular attendant. He was a member of the I.O.O.F. lodge in Winterset for more than 60 years. He was a charter member of the Winterset Lions club, and for more than 15 years had been chairman of the Sight Conservation committee of that club.
Surviving are his wife, seven children, Joseph Benge of Evanston, Ill., Robert Benge of Long Beach, Calif., Mrs. Gertrude Simon of Thayer, Mrs. Bertha Weinhold of Birmingham, Mich. Leland Benge of Davenport, Mrs. Miriam Lyon of Des Plaines, Ill., and Carol Benge of LaGrange, Ill; a brother, Bert Benge of Grand Junction, Colo.; eight grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held this Thursday at 2 p.m. from the Winterset Christian church, conducted by the pastor, the Rev. Warren Hile. Burial will be made in the Winterset cemetery.
