Earlham Echo - May 1948
Earlham, Iowa

Jessie Otis Craven, son of Newton O. and Mary Elizabeth Craven was born on a farm near the Bear Creek Church in Dallas county, Iowa, February 23, 1877. When he was a small boy, his father became a United Brethren minister, and the family lived in various communities in Iowa wherever pastoral work called.

When Otis was 13, his father passed away and the family came to live northwest of Earlham. He has continued to live in the vicinity of Earlham where he was engaged in farming with the exception of a few years at Winterset, when he was doing county road work.

In 1902 he was married to Mattie E. Studer who passed away in 1912. In 1913 he was married to Alma E. Kaye, but again his home was broken when Anna passed away in 1931. In August 1943 he was married to Tacy Pearson who survives him.

On January 11th, 1948 he suffered a cerebral hemorrhage which rendered him helpless. He was taken to the Dexter hospital and later moved to the home of his niece, Mrs. Harold Comly of Casey, Iowa. On May the 5th he passed away at the age of 71 years, two months and 13 days.

He was a great lover of children which endeared him to his nephews and nieces. He deeply appreciated his home. He and his wife were living in grandfather Craven's last home when he was stricken, and it was such a trial to him that he could not spend his last days there.

He was a good neighbor and when he saw others in need, he was moved to help in any way he could.

He is preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Chas. M. Craven and a sister, Eva Wheeler Randall.

He is survived by his wife, her daughter Mary Warner of Virginia, two step grandchildren, one brother, Willis Craven of Wonewoc, Wisconsin, one sister, Cora E. Compton of Cottage Grove, Oregon, and four nieces.

(Burial was in the Earlham cemetery)
