Death takes Walter R. Price

Walter R. Price, popular mail carrier, died at his home early Friday morning from a heart attach. He would have been 44 years old i June.

Walter suffered a severe heart attack about five years ago but after several months of rest he was able to resume his work carrying the mail. He began as rural mail carrier May 12, 1941. Preceding this he served as postmaster from October 1933 up to the time of assuming his duties as rural carrier. He was a life long resident of Earlham.

He was a great lover of the out-of-doors, liking to hunt and fish. He was also keenly interested in the wild life conservation program. He had spent the afternoon preceding his death hunting for a wolf he had seen that morning on his route.

He is survived by his wife and two daughters, Jean and Sheryl, a brother William F. Price and three sisters Mrs. Shifflett, Mrs. Cachiaras and Mrs. Stockwell.

Funeral services were held at the Earlham Church of Christ Monday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. Rev. DeLoss Marken, chaplain at the veterns' hospital in Des Moines had charge of the services, assisted by Rev. S.R. Overholser. Burial was in the Earlham cemetery.

Walter Reed Price, son of Walter John Price and Nancy Elizabeth Reed Price, was born June 7, 1903 at Earlham, and passed away there May 7, 1948 at the age of forty-four years and eleven months. With the exception of his junior year at Minnesota Bible College in Minneapolis, he spent his entire school life at Earlham and graduated with the class of 1922. At the age of fourteen he obeyed his Lord in Christian baptism and was added to the Church of Christ.

On June 28, 1925 he was married to Clella Mabel Slocum also of Earlham. To this union were born two daughters, Eleanor Jean and Sheryl Sue, which with his wife survive him.

From 1922 until 1933, except for one year, he acted as assistant to his brother in the W. F. Price Merchantile Company. The following June he began his work as postmaster continuing until 1941 when he transferred to the mail route. His fifteen years of service were marked with sincerity and conscientious effort. His mail route was not just a road to him, but a trail past the home of his friends.

He was devoted to his wife and children, and his interest centered around his home. He will be remembered also for his great love for the woods, fields, and streams of God's out of doors.

He was one of a family of seven, having been preceded in death by Raymond Robert and James Sterling. In addition to his wife and two daughters, he leaves one brother, William F. Price of Earlham, and three sisters: Mabel Cachiaras of Minneapolis, Minnesota; Mary Shifflett of Dexter, and Esther Stockwell of St. Paul Park, Minnesota. He also leaves fifteen nieces and nephews who will remember his a valued friend and confidante.
