ELDERLY FARMER TAKES OWN LIFE

John Davis Leaves Estate to Madison County Hospital

John Davis, a life-long resident of Jefferson township, fatally shot himself on Wednesday, April 14 at his farm home there. He was 62 years of age.

Mr. Davis had been in ill health recently. He telephoned a neighbor, Clifton Taylor, asking him to come over right away. When Taylor arrived, he found Davis mortally wounded. A doctor was called but little could be done, and Davis died shortly after the doctor arrived.

After a routine investigation, County Coroner Paul Eggleston termed the death a suicide, and that no inquest would be held.

When Mr. Davis' will was opened and read, it was found he had bequeathed his entire estate to the Madison county Memorial hospital. This is expected to add a considerable sum to the hospital fund. No exact estimate as to the size of the estate is available at this time, but it is known to include one farm of more than 150 acres, a one-third interest in another farm of about 225 acres, and considerable livestock and other personal property.

This will was drawn up almost a year ago. It was dated April 25, 1947.

Mr. Davis had never married, and his nearest surviving relatives are two sisters, Mrs. Mae Prohaska and Mrs. Rose Trester, both of Earlham.

He was the son of James Madison and Arvilla Davis, and was born in Jefferson township, Dec. 25, 1885. His entire life was spent in that community.

Funeral services were held Sunday from the Ramsey-Richards funeral home in Winterset, in charge of the Rev. Wilbur Watkins, pastor of the Winterset Church of Christ. Burial was made in the McDonald cemetery in Jefferson township.
