Thursday, October 7, 1909Death of Mrs. Mercer
Mrs. Edwinna K. Mercer died at her home in Winterset last Friday after an illness of several weeks. The cause of her death was heart disease, superinducted by a nervous difficulty. There was a fire a few months ago which consumed one of the buildings to the rear of the Mercer Flat since which her decline was marked and continuous.
The subject of this obituary was a woman of marked characteristics and many womenly virtues. She had hosts of friends who dearly loved and respected her. Her funeral occurred last Sunday and was largely attended. Seldom have we witnessed a funeral occasion where expressions of sorrow and sympathy were more numerous and sincere.
Mrs. Mercer was born in Benton county Missouri May 27, 1852. She came with her parents, James and Margaret Rodgers to Lucas county, Iowa in her infancy and soon thereafter to Madison county, Iowa which remained her home till her death. She was married to Mr. Mercer Jan 1, 1871. Two children were born, one a lovely girl, Mae, who died in 1894, the other son, Harry who is now all that is left of the family. Mr. Mercer having died in 1907.
Mrs. Mercer was a member of the Ladies of the Maccabees which fraternity attended the funeral in a body and marched to the cemetery. They rendered a portion of the ritual at the house and also at the grave which services were impressive and in structure.
Left alone, the only surviving member of a once happy family, Harry, though alone in the world will have this one source of comfort. It is the remembrance of his faithful and patient care for his mother during her widowhood and protracted sickness and death.
