Mr. J. S. Hadley Is Called

Death again cost the community one of its valued members Monday, when Mr. Jesse S. Hadley passed out of this life at eleven o’clock in the morning. His was a busy life, not cast for the high and conspicuous places, but full of humble labor faithfully performed. Work to him was not a duty but a pleasure, and he died as he must have wished, in the midst of service. Only three weeks before he was called he hauled three cartloads of wood from the Masonic Temple ground to his home and sawed and split them ready for use. Thus his life’s labor terminated, for he fell into a long unnatural sleep in the afternoon that presaged the clear call from eternity. Almost to the last his mind retained its normal vigor, but his physical powers had responded for the last time. He rallied from a partial paralysis after a week, but his heart would not rally and life ebbed surely but insensibly, borne on the ceaseless tide that was to bear him far.

“Jess,” as he was affectionately known to young and old, never grew old, though his years had passed the allotted time. The coming season was to have been a busy one for him. His energy knew no bounds except those set by his physical being. Yet the last illness, which was the first serious one of his seventy-six years, found him patient. A smiling resignation glorified the closing chapter of his life, and his words of good cheer, hope and faith were a benediction to those who called upon him.

The following obituary and tribute was read by Dr. McGrew to the many who gathered at the funeral service Wednesday afternoon:

Jesse S., son of Edward and Elizabeth Hadley, was born in Morgan County, Indiana, Nov. 13, 1848, and put off his earthly tabernacle at Earlham, Iowa, January 25, 1925, aged 76 years, 2 months and 13 days. He was one of a family of six children, three boys and three girls, only one of whom, Elias Hadley, of Entiat, Wash., is living at the present time. He came with his parents to Iowa in 1864, settling in the Bear Creek neighborhood, moving to Earlham 39 years ago and has since made his home here.

He was married to Emmeline George, Aug. 28, 1871, and to this happy union there were born 6 children, Emmett E. of Andover, Kansas; Arthur W., a missionary to the Indians at Hominy, Okla.; Waldo E. of Earlham; Mrs. Pearl H. Brauer, of Oskaloosa, Iowa; Isom D. of Sumner, Iowa; and Homer G. of Mason City, who together with the wife and fourteen grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends are left to mourn their loss. Bro.

Hadley served as Town Clerk of Earlham for several years and as Assessor for 20 years. He was a birth-right member of the Society of Friends and while still a child was soundly converted and lived ever after a consistent Christian life, “adorning the doctrine” of his Master whom he loved devotedly. He served as an Elder in the church for many years and had been Supt. of the S. S. at both Bear Creek and Earlham, and for more than 30 years he has taught the same class in the Earlham Friends Bible School, many of his pupils never having any other teacher than he since reaching maturity. He also taught in the Public Schools for 21 consecutive terms and many of his pupils are today occupying positions of honor and trust in the various walks of life.

He was of a cheerful, sunny disposition always seeking to do good to those with whom he came in contact, always grateful for any favor shown him and always striving to point his fellowmen to his Saviour. Now, he has joined the Church Triumphant, and with many of his loved ones who have gone before, is praising God and Jesus Christ before the Throne. May we who are left behind for the little while seek to emulate his life so that when our summons comes we may join him in that better land.

Funeral services were conducted at the Friends Church Wednesday, Jan. 26 at 2:00 p.m. in charge of his pastor, S. H. Williams, assisted by Pres. H. E. McGrew of Penn College and Rev. E. A. Thomas pastor of the M. E. Church, and the remains laid to rest in Earlham Cemetery.
