1925Margaret Emma Garrett
Christmas Day is usually a happy day and Christmas Day 1861 proved no exception to this rule in the home of George W. and Ann Hodson in Clinton County, Ohio. For on that day there came into their home a bright eyed baby girl to whom they gave the name of Margaret Emma. In 1877 at the age of 16 years Margaret or Maggie as she was called, came with her parents to Iowa, settling near Earlham where she has even since resided.
On March 7, 1886 she gave her life into the keeping of Menary S. Garrett and for almost 40 years they lived a happy life together. God blessed their home with 6 children; 3 boys and 3 girls, and there are all gathered today to pay their last respects to her who gave them birth. In 1895 she was converted to Christ and joined the Hickory Grove United Brethren church and remained faithful to the end.
For many years Mrs. Garrett has not been well and for the past 10 years she has been unable to get around to any extent but through all her suffering she ever maintained that sunny nature that has endeared her to all who knew her. Truly her life has been one of service to her husband, her children and ever thinking of others; with a smile here and a word of encouragement she has made for herself a place in life which will be hard to fill.
On Tuesday September 29, 1925, while the shades of night were gathering thick o’er Mother Earth she fell asleep in Jesus. She leaves to mourn her loss the faithful husband and companion Menary S. Garrett, the six children Mrs. Inez McKibben, Mrs. Glenn Ramsey, Bruce G., Kenneth G., Paul H., and Gladys Garrett, all of Earlham; two sisters, Dora and Jennie, of Spokane, Wash.; four brothers, Wm. Hodson of Reynolds, N. Dakota, Charles, Frank and Clarence Hodson of Forest City, Iowa, one grandchild Nyle McKibben and a host of other relatives and friends. One sister, Lillie passed on 25 years ago and today they are reunited.
There is a world above
Where parting is unknown;
A whole eternity of love
Formed for the good alone;
And faith beholds the dying here
Transplanted to that happier sphere.Funeral services were conducted at the Friends Church in Earlham on Thursday Oct. 1 by Rev. S. H. Williams and the remains laid to rest in Earlham Cemetery.
