Earlham Echo - September 1948
Earlham, Iowa

Albert Jerome DeVault, son of Charles H. and Minerva J. DeVault was born near Cedar Rapids, Iowa, January 9th, 1884, and passed to his eternal reward September 5th at the Lutheran hospital at Des Moines at the age of 64 years, seven months and 27 days. The first eight years of his life he spent at the place of his birth. In 1892 he moved with his parents to Penn township, Madison county, Iowa, which has since been his home, for over 56 years. In April 1915 he was united in marriage to Miss Hazel Patterson of Prairie City, Iowa, and to this union were born two children, Mrs. Esther Branam and Marion C. DeVault, both of Earlham, Iowa. Mr. DeVault spent his life as a farmer, farming the old home place. His love for horses was outstanding.

In December 1898, at the age of 14 years he professed conversion and was taken in at the time as a member of the Penn Center Methodist church, and for the past 50 years he has been an active and honored member of his church. At the time of his death he was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Penn Center Methodist church. Mr. DeVault was also a member of Earlham I.O.O.F. Lodge.

Those whom he leaves to mourn his departure are, his wife, the two children and four grandchildren: Judy, Ronnie and Shirley Branam and June DeVault. Two brothers, Mr. O. J. DeVault of Earlham and Mr. Clarence DeVault of Pasadena, California. One sister, Mrs. Frank Wilson of Earlham and a host of friends.

When death summoned him he had suffered for several months; surgery and medicine tried to restore him to health, but it was only for a short while. He is now free from pain and he is at rest from his labor. We are all better because we have known him. Thank you brother for faithful service. Rest in peace.

The funeral service was held from his home and at his church Wednesday afternoon, September 8th. His pastor was in charge of the service. The I.O.O.F. Lodge conducted a short service at the grave. Two beautiful selections were rendered by a mixed quartet. The large attendance and the beautiful floral offering was a testimony to the great esteem in which he was held in the community.
