Samuel E. Bates Succumbed to Heart Ailment at Portland
Samuel E. Bates, a native of Madison county, died July 5 at Portland, Ore., according to word received here this week. Death followed a heart attack. He was 49 years of age.
Mr. Bates was born in Madison county Aug. 10, 1898. As a child he lived in Idaho, but the family returned to Madison county in 1912. He was married here May 30, 1920, to Hazel Hatfield. They started housekeeping in Madison county, but moved to Zion in Adair county in 1929. He was employed at the Zion school for 12 years. During the war they moved to Hollywood, Calif., and in 1946 they went from there to Portland where his death occurred.
Surviving are his wife; two sons, Donald and Wendell, both of Portland; one granddaughter; his mother, Mrs. Frank Bates of Macksburg; two sisters, Mrs. Roy Hatfield of Lorimor and Mrs. Clayt Delaplain of Bagley; and four brothers, Ole Bates of Boise, Ida., and Vern, Lloyd and Roland Bates, all of Macksburg.
Funeral services were held in Portland and burial was made in Lincoln Memorial park there.
