Mildred Elizabeth Barnett

It seems but a very short time since the loving out-stretched hands of Willis J. and Eleanor Barnett received into their tender keeping a tiny baby girl. Their hearts were filled with a great joy on that day – June 30, 1898 – for even then little Mildred Elizabeth had the charm of winning her way into every heart.

Mildred grew up amongst Earlham folks much as other children grow, care-free and happy, and when she reached school age she took her place in the schools, graduating from Earlham High School in 1917.

She was a birthright member of the Friends Church and as a wise and noble child of that church she appreciated her heritage, joined early in the worship there and in Sunday School, and acceptably performed the many duties which she from time to time accepted as her part. She was an active member in the Auxiliary to the American Legion and there made herself felt and known as a good citizen.

On November 10th, 1920, she was married to Charles P. Price, and since that time these young people have made their home in Earlham or on the Barnett farm nearby, for Mildred was a home girl and desired to be in daily touch with those on whom she showered her greatest love. Her affection reached also beyond her home and she made many, many friends to all of whom the news of her sickness some weeks ago brought much sadness.

During the time of her illness and suffering she lacked not for love and care, for the same kind hands which had welcomed the tiny baby were again out-stretched to the grown woman in sympathetic helpfulness. Never did human effort go out to a suffer in greater love and Mildred received that care as she gave her aid, graciously and without complaint. Devoted parents and husband, fond relatives and friends did all in their power to nurse her back to health but stronger arms than theirs were outstretched to the frail little wife and into their loving shelter Mildred was tenderly drawn on Wednesday morning, May 27th, 1925.

Mildred was the only daughter of her parents and for many years the only child in their home, her brother Leslie having passed on when only three and a half years old. She was her mother’s constant pal and helper, the beautiful strong bond of love between parent and child testifying to the splendid character of both. The people of this community, to whom Mildred was well known, loved her and found in her a sincere friend. Her unselfish desire to help others and her smile which always lit up her happy face endeared her to both young and old. Well she knew the joy of giving for she gave freely of herself, of her time and talents. Her ability as a musician called her to places of both gladness and sorrow, but whatever the occasion Mildred gave willingly and cheerfully the best she had to give.

How prone we are to allow such services as she rendered to pass unnoticed or unappreciated; how slow to consider the demands made on such as she, and the fortitude required to be equal to all occasions.

A happy and useful life! In the prime of trusting, Christian young womanhood, much to which she could look forward and many loved ones to cherish. We wonder why its span reached only twenty-seven years – only four and a half years of happy companionship with the partner of her choice. Yes, we wonder; but the same faith, that was hers draws us back to our strong belief in the Power of God to do what is best for His children and we know Mildred has not lived in vain.

The death of Mrs. Charles Price, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Willis Barnett, took place at an early hour last Wednesday morning, under circumstances particularly sad. The best medical skill and tender nursing failed to prolong her life. Deceased was a talented young woman of a very sunny disposition and her presence was always the center of peace and happiness. Her sudden death at the age of 27, is a terrible blow to her husband and parents, and exemplifies the uncertainty of life and the certainty of death coming at any hour or moment. Seldom had such a manifestation of genuine sorrow been expressed as was shown on the death of this young person.

The funeral took place on Friday afternoon at the Friends church. A large number of relatives and friends came from other towns to pay their last tribute of respect to the memory of one who was a general favorite.
