WM. F. MARQUARDT

William Ferdinand Marquardt, son of Ferdinand and Augusta Marquardt, was born on November 6, 1879, in Jefferson township, Madison county, Iowa and departed this life at his home on Monday, July 8, 1957. He attained the age of 77 years, eight months, and two days. He spent his entire life in this community, in fact, he was a resident of this very township from birth to the time of his departure.

He was the second in a family of 12 children. He was baptized in early infancy in the faith of the Lutheran church by Pastor Horn of Dexter. This was prior to the time that a Lutheran congregation was organized at Van Meter. At the age of five he witnessed the building of Trinity Lutheran's first church. This was in 1884 and 1885.

He attended public school during the summer at the so called Storck's schoolhouse and also the congregation's own parochial school taught by Pastor Gus Weiler. He received the holy rite for Confirmation on March 26, 1893 at the age of 13. His instruction by Pastor L. Von Schenk was very thorough. As a result he received a remarkably clear understanding of the chief doctrines of the Bible and he committed to memory a wonderful treasury of hymns, many of which he could and did recite to the very last for his own comfort.

His faith and his church were always of paramount importance and he always gave eagerly of his services to his congregation. He succeeded one of the notable founders of our church, Mr. George Storck, as elder and faithfully discharged the duties of this office for some 25 years. Since the time when he became a voting member of the congregation as a young man, he never missed a single meeting of the congregation, with the exception of the one held last Sunday when he was on his death bed.

He was unite in holy matrimony on February 17, 1901 with Miss Emma Bernau. To this happy union three children were born; Ernest, Fernanda, and Ester Emma, who preceded her parents in death at the age of three in 1910.

In 1951 Mr. and Mrs. Marquardt together with relatives and friends were privileged to celebrate the golden anniversary of their marriage.

His beloved wife was taken from his side suddenly on May 31, 1955.

He leaves to mourn his passing therefore, his two children, Ernest A. of Earlham, and Fernanda Lobstein of Minneapolis. Also five grandchildren and three great grandchildren, also three sisters; Amanda Wishmier and Emma Jensen of Van Meter, and Bertha Maasz of Whitewater, Wisconsin, and two brothers, Carl and August.
