84 Years Old, Had Lived in Peru Community for 53 Years
Mrs. Elizabeth Clifton, aged 84 years, 5 months and 5 days, passed away at her home here Sunday evening at seven o'clock. She had been cared for by Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Bullin. Her husband, LeRoy Clifton died 6 years ago. Mrs. Clifton had lived in the Peru vicinity for the past 53 years. She had no children, but adopted one son, Raymond and she reared three other children in her home, June and Clyde Barker and Cora Benson. June is now Mrs. Amos Creger of Indianola and Cora, Mrs. Lyle Travis of Peru. Her sister, Mrs. C. E. Elarton of Osyka, Miss., has been here during her last weeks.
She was the former Mattie Anderson, a long time compositor of the Madisonian. The funeral was held at the Peru M. E. Church Tuesday afternoon, at two o'clock, conducted by the Rev. Howard Machlan.

MRS. L. F. CLIFTON DIES IN PERU
Elizabeth Anderson Clifton, oldest child of William and Nancy Anderson was born in Mahaska county, September 15, 1853 and died February 20, 1938. When just a small child she came to Madison County and settled on a farm now owned by Clyde Anderson Minard, two and one-half miles east of Truro. She grew to womanhood and began teaching school at the age of 17 years.
In March 1879 she was united in marriage to LeRoy F. Clifton, who preceded her in death. Mr. and Mrs. Clifton spent their entire 53 years of married life in this community. First on a farm three miles south of Peru, later to the farm on the north hillside of Peru where they both died. Mr. Clifton died August 3, 1932.
Mrs. Clifton was a member of the Methodist church throughout her entire life. The last three years she had been a shut-in and was cared for by Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Bullin,
She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Mary S. Hagan of Galesburg, Illinois, and Mrs. Mattie Anderson Elarton of Osyka, Mississippi. Three sisters and one brother and her parents preceded her in death.
Funeral services were held in the Methodist church Tuesday afternoon at two o’clock, conducted by the Rev. J. H. Machlan. Burial was made in Ebenezer Cemetery. Pall bearers were, Claude and Clyde Shearer, Lawrence Simmons, Fred Beeler, Ralph Emerson, and Sylvester Clifton.
