John Burgan was born July 15, 1861, in Park county, Indiana and departed this life at Barney, Iowa, March 9, 1922, aged 60 years, 7 months and 24 days. He lived in Indiana with his parents until the year 1880, one year after his father's death, after which he came with his mother, two brothers and two sisters to Madison county, Iowa, having lived in this community most of the time since.
On December 14, 1898 he was united in marriage to Miss Mary E. Hamblin. To this union were born ten children, of which nine survive him, one dying in infancy.
At the age of fourteen years, he was converted at an altar of prayer in their home. Later he united with the Methodist church.
About five years ago a cancer appeared on his face. About two years ago its vital work began which resulted in death.
He leaves to mourn their loss a wife, nine children, an aged mother Elizabeth Burgan of Independence, Kansas, two brothers, S. B. of Ames, Kansas, and W. O. of Independence, Kansas, two sisters, Mrs. Martha St. John of Sparta, Missouri and Mrs. Henry Riggs of Clarke county, Iowa, besides a host of friends and neighbors.
Funeral services were conducted from the home at 10 o'clock March 10th by Brother A. C. Gibson of Cooper, Iowa, and the remains laid to rest in Union cemetery, Clarke county, Iowa.
