GEAN CAUDLE, 62 DIES INSTANTLY

William C. Price, Aged 26, Is In Critical Condition

One man is dead, another is in extremely critical condition, and six other persons were more or less seriously injured in two motor vehicle collisions in Madison county this week.

Gean F. Caudle, well known Winterset resident, was instantly killed Monday morning when the Buick roadster he was driving collided with a Ford sedan driven by William C. Price, young farmer near Earlham.

The accident occurred about 9:30 a.m. on the rural road one mile west and one-fourth mile north of the Worthington church.

Price and his 4-year-old daughter, Vickie, who was riding with him, were rushed to the Dexter hospital. At latest reports, Price's condition was said to be extremely grave. He suffered internal injuries, including a punctured lung and crushed chest. He was being given blood transfusions in an effort to save his life.

The little girl was reported to have suffered fractures of the hip and pelvic bone, but her condition was not regarded as serious as that of her father, early this week.

The accident occurred when the two cars met head-on at the top of a sharp rise in the road. Caudle was driving north, and the Price car was going south. Both cars were heavily damaged.

Caudle, who was 62 years old, had been a resident of Winterset for many years. Much of his life had been spent as a mechanic in the employ of Madison county. Recently he had been doing general mechanical work.

He was born in Hamilton county Sept. 22, 1885, the son of Aaron and Johanna Pehrson Caudle. He was married at Winterset Dec. 2, 1911 to Bessie E. Clark.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Bessie Caudle of Winterset; a son, Clark Caudle of Los Angeles, California; two brothers, Leslie Caudle of Jefferson township and Myron Caudle of Florence, Alabama; and a foster sister, Mrs. Gertrude Allen of Monrovia, Calif.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. this Thursday from the Richards funeral home in charge of the Rev. F. Donald Worden, pastor of the Winterset Baptist church. Burial will be made in the Winterset cemetery.
