PERU RESIDENT COMMITS SUICIDE

Charles M. Dowler, 71, took his own life by hanging Monday night at his home in Peru where he lived alone.

Mr. Dowler was a long time resident of Madison county. For many years he lived in the Elm Grove neighborhood before moving to Peru.

Relatives said he had been in failing health recently. He left no note to explain his action.

Mr. Dowler was last seen alive Monday evening. His body was found Tuesday about 10:30 a.m. by a relative, Robert Nichols, who came to investigate when the elderly man did not make his customary appearance Tuesday morning.

Sheriff C. A. Letz and County Coroner Paul Eggleston were called. Coroner Eggleston reports the death a suicide with no inquest necessary.

CHARLES M. DOWLER BURIED THURSDAY

Funeral services for Charles M. Dowler whose death occurred Sept. 14 at his home in Peru, were held last Thursday from the Kale funeral home at Truro. The Rev. Eldon Haworth of St. Charles conducted the services. Burial was made in the St. Charles cemetery.

Mr. Dowler was 71 years of age at his death. He was born July 26, 1883 in Ohio township, a son of Steward and Sarah Hogue Dowler. His early life was spent in Madison county. As a young man of 22 years he moved to South Dakota where he homesteaded in the western part of the state. After spending 27 years there he returned to Madison county in 1932 to a farm in South township. He retired and moved to Peru 18 months ago.

Mr. Dowler never married. Nearest surviving relatives are a brother, Asa Dowler of St. Charles.
