WILLIAM SMALLEY DIES IN CALIFORNIA

He Was Member of Family Formerly Prominent in Winterset

William H. Smalley, a native of Winterset and member of a family formerly well known here, died May 24 at a hospital in Los Angeles, according to word received here this week.

Mr. Smalley was 44 years of age. He was born in Winterset in 1905, the son of William and Eva Smalley. He attended the Winterset schools and graduated from the Winterset high school with the class of 1923. He was an honor student and an outstanding athlete. As a young man he moved to California with his mother and had been living at West Los Angeles.

In recent years he had been a writer and music teacher. He was a veteran of the recent war, serving in the U.S. Army Medical corps from 1942 to 1945, in China, Burma and India.

Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Eva G. Smalley of Long Beach, and two brothers, Col. Anson J. Smalley of Ontario, Calif., and John L. Smalley of Long Beach. Funeral services and burial were held in California.
