James Breakenridge

James, the son of James and Carinda Breakenridge, was born December 5, 1860, in Lynn county, Iowa. His boyhood days were spent in Lynn county, where he attended the pioneer district school. At the age of 11 years he came with his parents to Madison county, locating in Penn township and remained with and cared for them until the death of his mother in 1889.

On February 1, 1888, he was united in marriage to Helen M. Perkins of Maple Grove. To this union were born four children, Aletha and Glenn, passed on in childhood; Harold G. and Raymond D. survive him. His wife departed April 11, 1921. He then made his home with his son, Raymond for 8 years, spending part of one year with relatives in California and Oklahoma. He then moved to his own home and lived there until his health failed him. He then returned to the home of his son Raymond and spent the remaining months with his sons, Harold and Raymond.

He leaves one brother, Thomas A. of Fresno, California; two sisters, Mrs. J. W. Wheeler, Stillwater, Oklahoma, Mrs. Ella Lenocker, San Diego, California and two grandchildren, Fern Eloise and Marilyn Ann. Many cousins, nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

In early youth he united with the Evangelical church, later transferring to the Penn Center, Maple Grove and West Star, where he worked faithfully until the time of his departure. He was a faithful worker in Sunday School and church. For many years he was superintendent or teacher when it was possible for him to be in his place. He took great interest in all community affairs and served as supervisor and several township offices.

He lay down his armor at the home of his son, Raymond, March 17, 1932 at the age of 71 years, 3 months, 12 days. Having fought a good fight, having kept the faith, he awaits the crown.
